The Fall runways were filled with new takes on punk fashion—biker jackets paired with overly feminine underpinnings in chiffon and sheer fabrics like those shown at Valentino, just to name a few. It’s the juxtaposition of tough and light elements that makes them so compelling, which is clearly not lost on Kim Kardashian West and her daughter, North. Over the weekend at a birthday celebration for brother Rob Kardashian, it appeared that the family West was doing their best to marry a ’90s grunge look with both punk and ladylike punctuations.
Kim kept things cool in Alice + Olivia’s faux-fur topper and let the rest of the ensemble elevate the look from groupie to leader of the pack. A sheer blouse lends a familiar goth touch, while a fitted pencil skirt and fishnet tights amp up the Cyndi Lauper vibe. Satin-trimmed, pointy-toe mid-calf boots nod to steampunk style and add a streamlined finish. But it’s North who truly steals the show, matching Mom with a layered silhouette, including a tee to give contrast to her slip dress. We’ve seen the toddler’s style morph from fairy-tale princess to budding streetwear queen in Thrasher hoodies or pint-size pieces from Dad’s tours, and here she matches Kim almost to a T—in mini sizes, of course. But leave it to the precocious 2-year-old punk to swap out Mom’s heels for Dr. Martens.
