Would you wear an outfit made of poop?

Jalila Essaïdi’s diaphanous tunics, crocheted halter tops and flowing lounge pants may not look like crap — but they are literally made from the stuff.

The Dutch designer has developed a lightweight ecofriendly fabric from recycled cow dung, fashioning all sorts of garments with the novel textile. The project, called Mestic, aims to alleviate the the world’s excessive amount of animal excrement, which can bring about salmonella, groundwater contamination and other environmental and health concerns.

And while a poop-based biotextile may sound icky, it’s hardly the most bizarre solution to the fashion industry’s devastating effects on the environment.

Earlier this year, fashion student Tina Gorjanc announced her plan to create cruelty-free leather jackets made from legendary designer Alexander McQueen’s DNA. Compared with that, the idea of manure-couture sounds downright cute.
