The Tie You Should Wear When You Have to Wear One, But Don’t Want To

Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. This month it’s all about business casual, and today we’re talking about knitted ties. The tie with a square end and vintage appeal that’s essential to every man’s spring wardrobe.

If a wide silk pointed tie with lots of sheen is the Martini of neckwear, then slim knit ties are the Negroni. They’re great in the spring and summer months but totally acceptable year round. They’re less serious office wear and more summer wedding attire. Plus if worn correctly, they’ve got vintage appeal without looking old-fashioned. All of this is proof that a knitted tie is your best choice when curating the next phase of your business casual wardrobe. Pick up a few in staple colors like navy or gray, then go beyond the normal in more saturated hues of green, light blue, and turquoise.
