Mascara isn’t the easiest make-up to choose. You’re faced with shelves and shelves of different wands, with loads of different (but equally tempting) buzzwords: best lash-lengthening mascara, best volumising mascara, best waterproof mascara, best separating mascara, and so on… The buzzwords make us feel stressed before we’ve even started. But what does it really mean, do they really work and, most importantly, which is the best mascara for YOU?
We’ve tried and tested the industry’s best mascaras and rounded up our favourites, with one to suit every taste — whether you’re a fan of long, thick or natural eyelashes. There’s also make-up tips on how to get the most out of each wand.
For daywear, we like a subtle flutter; just a couple of coats on the top and bottom lashes for a pretty, natural look. We particularly liked the look at the Matthew Williamson show. To achieve it, sweep two coats of Benefit’s classic They’re Real mascara, building volume on the top lashes. If you want something even more natch, try Benefit’s new They’re Real Tinted Mascara Primer, which works well on its own for a day look.
While in the past we’ve required a different mascara for a more dramatic party look, now they’re getting cleverer and the same one can be built up for Insta-glam volume. (Be careful to apply the coats quickly to avoid it drying in between.)
To keep lashes unclumped, start at the base of the lashes and draw the wand up, moving it from side to side as you go. If you’re a fan of the eyelash curler, be sure you use it before you start application to avoid sticking the lashes together and pulling them out.
If you want thicker lashes, watch how to achieve it with only the products in your make-up bag (… A natty blogger tip).
In our edit of the best, there’s Benefit’s fabulous They’re Real! mascara, which took the eyelash scene by storm in 2011, as well as the high street favourites like L’Oreal, Lancome and Maybelline mascaras. Don’t forget the newly launched products too. Check them out now and find your perfect one…
