Model Barbie Ferreira's Stretch-Mark Selfie Has Women Celebrating Their Bodies

On Monday morning, Aerie model Barbie Ferreira shared a close-up of her stretch marks on Instagram, and the picture includes a body-positive message that many women can relate to. “My lil’ stripes are out here,” Ferreira wrote underneath the post. “I’m soothing them with vitamin E oil and noticing how cute my body can be despite lil’ changes.” The 19-year-old model has been an inspiration to many, and this picture is empowering even more women to embrace their stretch marks. The photo has over 17,000 likes and hundreds of Ferreira’s followers commented on the image with their own stories.

“This makes me appreciate my body so much more,” one commenter wrote. “I’ve recently gotten stretch marks on my tummy, and I felt like the world was going under. I’ve tried everything to get them away, but seeing this makes me feel better. Thank you so much for sharing this and making me like my body a little more.”

Another fan admired Ferreira’s confidence. “You’ve made me feel so strong and less negative about my own stretch marks. They are similar to where you have yours, and I just want to acknowledge them as part of me. Thank you for being brave in your industry. You’re going to start a revolution.”

Ferreira is definitely a part of a huge movement that’s happening all around the world. Not only are ladies learning to embrace what makes them unique, they are also coming up with affectionate nicknames for their marks. “I call mine caramel drizzle,” wrote one follower underneath Ferreira’s photo, and another commenter described her stretch marks as “power lines.”

Stretch marks can happen to anyone (including men). When the body changes because of weight gain or pregnancy, the skin stretches and sometimes the collagen in the dermis rips, leaving a scar behind. While there are creams and laser treatments available to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks, there’s no way to completely get rid of them—and Ferreira is showing the world that it’s OK.

Ferreira isn’t the only one using her platform to get rid of the stigma associated with stretch marks. There are also a few brands jumping on board with the body-positive movement. Lane Bryant’s latest resort campaign features Denise Bidot and her beautiful marks. And recently, Victoria’s Secret shared a photo with a model’s stretch marks on display. Each time a photo goes viral, it is slowly helping women embrace their natural beauty.
